"Salt Block Unexpectedly Stretches" (ScienceDaily, June 24, 2009)

To stretch a supply of salt generally means using it sparingly. But researchers from Sandia National Laboratories and the University of Pittsburgh were startled when they found they had made the solid actually physically stretch.

Sciende Daily reports: "It's not supposed to do that," said Sandia principal investigator Jack Houston. "Unlike, say, gold, which is ductile and deforms under pressure, salt is brittle. Hit it with a hammer, it shatters like glass."

Zwitser bouwt vliegtuig op zonne-energie
De Zwitserse avonturier Bertrand Piccard heeft een prototype van zijn door zonne-energie aangedreven vliegtuig getoond waarmee hij rond de wereld wil vliegen. Dat meldt de BBC.

Het toestel zal nu nog testvluchten maken om te kijken of het ook ’s nachts kan vliegen. Met het uiteindelijke type wil hij in 2012 de Atlantische Oceaan oversteken. Hij wil de mogelijkheden van duurzame energie aantonen.

Overheid gaat duurzamer inkopen
Jaarlijks doet de overheid voor ongeveer 40 miljard euro boodschappen en dat wil ze meer duurzaam doen, zo meldt het dagblad Trouw.

In 2010 gaat de rijksoverheid voor 100 procent duurzaam inkopen, gemeenten voor 75 procent en de provincies en waterschappen voor 50 procent.

Er wordt gestreefd naar minder energieverbruik, meer duurzame grondstoffen, minder afval, meer recycling en zo weinig mogelijk emissies van vervuilende stoffen.

Bozeman City job requirement raises privacy concerns

Applying for a job with the City of Bozeman? You may be asked to provide more personal information than you expected. That was the case for one person who applied for employment with the City.

The anonymous viewer emailed the news station to express concern with a component of the city's background check policy. This states that to be considered for a job applicants must provide log-in information and passwords for social network sites in which they participate.
