Obama's considering appointing a former Monsanto vice president, Mike Taylor, to head the Food Safety Working Group at the FDA.
As Jill Richardson writes at LaVidaLocavore at the link above, Taylor thinks the FDA wastes too much time on food safety inspections at meat packing plants. Further, he believes that one of their main problems is that they have to slow down their line speed too much.

Homeless people die after bird flu vaccine trial in Poland
Three Polish doctors and six nurses are facing criminal prosecution after a number of homeless people died following medical trials for a vaccine to the H5N1 bird-flu virus, according to The Telgraph.
The British newspaper reports: “The medical staff, from the northern town of Grudziadz, are being investigated over medical trials on as many as 350 homeless and poor people last year, which prosecutors say involved an untried vaccine to the highly-contagious virus.”
Authorities claim that the alleged victims received £1-2 to be tested with what they thought was a conventional flu vaccine. But according to investigators, it was actually an anti bird-flu drug.

Baby kan toe met een prikje minder
Baby’s kunnen een vaccinatie minder krijgen. Nu krijgen zij voor hun eerste verjaardag vier keer een vaccin tegen pneumokokken, bacteriën die levensbedreigende ziekten kunnen veroorzaken, maar het geven van drie vaccinaties blijkt net zo effectief.
Onderzoekers van het UMC Utrecht, het Nederlands Vaccin Instituut en het Spaarne Ziekenhuis hebben dit in een studie die is verschenen in het internationale wetenschappelijke tijdschrift JAMA gemeld, aldus De Volkskrant.

GM-free zones to ‘protect’ farmers
Welsh farm leaders have welcomed tough new proposals to tighten controls on genetically modified crops.
According to the Daily Post, the Assembly Government wants GM-free zones in Wales and a ban on GM crops in national parks and SSSIs.
The newspaper reports: “Also proposed is strict liability for GM crop growers, and a new voluntary industry-funded compensation scheme. Cardiff will even consider a statutory scheme.”
The Farmers Union of Wales said it backed measures which protected growers of traditional crops from accidental contamination by genetically modified organisms (GMOs). FUW president Gareth Vaughan said the industry had invested heavily on added-value food products.
“Going down the GMO route will quickly lead to us losing that competitive edge,” he said.

Strange Martial Law via Food Control: HR 2749
HR 2749 is a strange bill in many ways. While the other “food safety” bills have been around since winter, allowing for much public discussion on the internet, HR 2749 has only suddenly appeared. It is a mutant conglomeration of the worst of the other bills, with the addition of one very original part – martial law.

Huge Iraq Dust Storm Seen From Space
A giant dust storm that has raged through Iraq and other Middle East countries for more than a week has been imaged by satellite, according to LiveScience.
LiveScience said: “Many Iraqis considered the storm to be the worst in living memory, according to news reports. Hundreds of people reported to the hospital for respiratory distress, and the blowing dust interfered with travel by air and on land.”
The new picture, released today, comes from NASA's Aqua satellite. It shows the region at the height of the storm July 5.

De Telegraaf eist samen met de journalistenvakbond NVJ en het Genootschap van Hoofdredacteuren dat de AIVD onmiddellijk stopt met het afluisteren, volgen en observeren van journalisten. Het recht op vrije nieuwgaring is in het geding. Dat meldt NOVA.
De Telegraaf wil de misstanden over de inval in Irak aan de kaak stellen. Er is nog veel meer informatie in handen gekomen van de AIVD. Dat zijn de verkeerde handen.

Unieke dieren in de natuur
Video wilde dieren in Kenia
Veel van de wilde beesten in een van de belangrijkste reservaten in Afrika worden met uitsterven bedreigd. Dat bericht de BBC.
Zo leven er nu 95 procent minder giraffen in het Masai Mara reservaat in Kenia, een van de meest wonderbaarlijke natuurlijke wonderen op aarde. Een video met prachtige opnamen van wilde dieren als buffels, wrattenzwijnen, leeuwen en zebra’s in dit unieke reservaat.

Natuur en vleermuizen
Vleermuizen die in bomen wonen leiden een bijzonder verborgen bestaan. Ze leven ver buiten het bereik van mensen. Meestal zijn de geluiden die ze maken voor ons blote oor niet hoorbaar. Maar juist nu kan men ze de boom uit horen piepen.
